What We Learned
Listening to the community revealed how deeply transportation impacts every aspect of youth development.
Transportation Creates Opportunity
Mobility is directly tied to economic and personal growth. Without it, youth are cut off from the resources they need to thrive.
Education
Students frequently miss tutoring, study groups, and college prep events simply because the school bus is their only ride home.
Employment
Many teens turn down part-time jobs or internships because they cannot guarantee reliable transportation for evening or weekend shifts.
Health and Wellness
Access to healthcare, mental health services, and recreational sports is severely limited for youth without personal vehicles.
Key Takeaways
Safety Matters
Youth expressed significant anxiety about walking along roads without sidewalks or waiting at unlit bus stops.
What Youth Want
Independence. The ability to navigate their community safely and affordably without relying entirely on parents or expensive rideshares.
Why It Matters
When we solve transportation, we solve access to education, jobs, and health. It is the foundational step to youth empowerment.
The Transportation Challenge
Transportation barriers create real consequences for youth in our communities
of youth report missing job opportunities due to lack of transportation
average daily commute time for youth without personal vehicles
of rural youth live more than 5 miles from essential services
Why this matters
In Nash and Edgecombe Counties, young people face a transportation crisis that limits their access to education, employment, healthcare, and social connections. Limited public transit routes, infrequent service, and lack of safe pedestrian and cycling infrastructure create barriers that disproportionately affect youth from low-income families.
These aren't just statistics—they represent missed job interviews, skipped medical appointments, abandoned educational opportunities, and social isolation. When transportation becomes a barrier, it perpetuates cycles of poverty and limits the potential of an entire generation.

Access 2 Opportunity is a youth-led initiative breaking down the systemic transportation barriers that limit potential in Nash and Edgecombe Counties. We exist to ensure that every young person can reach the opportunities they deserve.
Our Story
Access 2 Opportunity began when students across Nash and Edgecombe Counties realized they shared a profound, common struggle: getting to where they needed to be. Whether it was a part-time job, a college campus tour, a doctor's appointment, or simply connecting with peers, reliable transportation was consistently the missing link.
In our communities, limited public transit, long distances between essential destinations, and a lack of safe pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure create tangible obstacles for young people trying to build their futures. We witnessed our classmates missing critical job interviews, skipping vital extracurricular activities, and abandoning life-changing opportunities simply because they had no way to get there.
This project is our determined response. Through community-driven research, relentless advocacy, and collaborative partnerships with local leaders, we are working to ensure that a young person's mobility is never the barrier to their success.
